Cooperation to help localize design technique of aircraft carrier

KIMS hosted a project meeting to help localize design technique of aircraft carrier

Korea Institute of Materials Science(KIMS), a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT of the Republic of Korea hosted a project meeting to discuss how to provide technical support for the invited organizations that are carrying out the project to localize design technique of light aircraft carriers. Led by Dr. Byon from the department of extreme environmental Coatings at KIMS, around 60 people participated in the meeting who are from Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials, Korea Aerospace Research Institute, and Pusan National University, etc.

The key technology issue here is to preemptively develop six technologies related to flight decks and platforms, which are necessary to secure key element technologies for the design of light aircraft carriers. The project began around October last year, and this meeting was held to review the results of the previous quarter and discuss the plan for the quarter to come.

KIMS is in charge of developing coating materials for flight decks and thermal analysis technology through the project. Developing coating materials is core technology which is to withstand engine injection heat of over 1,000 degrees Celsius emitted by a deck plane during takeoff and landing, and applies it to the flight deck.

Deck damage from exhaust flame results in loss of light aircraft carrier flying power. Therefore, coating materials on the flight deck is a core technology that must be secured. To this end, KIMS is developing materials with heat resistance against high-temperature exhaust flames, corrosion resistance considering giant marine structure, and anti-slip capability for ship planes and crew members.
