Carbon neutrality is led by cooperation of industry, univ., and research institute!

Carbon neutrality is led by cooperation of industry, univ., and research institute!

Korea Institute of Materials Science, a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT, will realize

a carbon-neutral era centered on green hydrogen together with Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine & Machinery Division and

Pusan National University. The 3 parties held an MOU signing ceremony at the main building of Pusan National University on

Monday, September 6 and pledged to jointly develop a green hydrogen production system and eco-friendly technology.

Currently, purified water is used for the water electrolysis systems out in the hydrogen fuel market. KIMS succeeded in

producing high-purity hydrogen from seawater at a low cost by using non-precious metal-based anion exchange membrane

seawater electrolysis technology. The joint research team aims to develop the world's first hydrogen production system using

seawater. As the demand for cryogenic eco-friendly fuels such as LNG and hydrogen is continuously increasing worldwide, the

research team will promote the localization of cryogenic equipment production due to the high price of imported products.

The purpose of the MOU is to jointly develop the core technology for green hydrogen production, marine engine, eco-friendly

energy, and performance improvement by bringing together source technologies from the university, commercialization

technology from the national research institute, and the industry sector. In the future, the three parties will establish a

virtuous cycle where they develop original technologies, nurture research manpower trained in the university and the research

institute, and employ this manpower in the industry sector.

Specifically, KIMS will be in charge of technology and demonstration of commercialization and enlargement based on the

developed electrode catalyst, and Hyundai Heavy Industries will lead the demonstration and commercialization of an MW

level green hydrogen production system using in-house surplus power, and Pusan National University which possesses

electrode catalyst technology that is the core of the water electrolysis system, will develop the source technology of high

efficiency, a low-cost catalyst that surpasses European water electrolysis system.

KIMS president Jung-hwan Lee said, "In order to quickly and efficiently realize the carbon-neutral era, a high degree of

cohesion is required for industry, academy, and research institute to gather their strengths and unite them. The three

organizations will do our best to research and cooperate so that the green hydrogen production system can be established

stably in the future."
