Science and safety culture blooms on an island! |
The Korea Institute of Materials Science, a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT, visited
Soan Elementary School in Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do to hold the Safety with Science event on November 25 (Thursday) with
the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute. As part of science popularization and safety culture expansion, the event was
held to cultivate students' science and safety minds and to create social values for students in island areas.
To provide an opportunity to explore science careers, researchers from KIMS and KERI visited the school and gave lectures to all
91 students at Soan Elementary School. The lectures were about “Science Experience” education including △ (metal material)
shape memory alloy principle education and experience, △ (surface technology) plating principle education and silver-plated tag
making, △ (energy) fuel cell principle education and making a saltwater car, and “Science Lecture” entitled as “Stories of Hidden
Materials.”
To raise students' awareness of safety culture, the two institutions also provided △ CPR training and kit-making class and △ first
aid and safety education; and allowed students to be aware of science and safety.
Jung-hwan Lee, the President of KIMS, said, “As a government-funded research institute which is run by the citizen’s taxes, we are
responsible for contributing to the spread of a safety culture and popularization of science.” “By developing various programs to
spread science and safety culture to cover marginalized areas, we will continue to do our best to fulfill our role,” he added.
KIMS will survey science and safety awareness of students and faculty members after the event to actively reflect
the result for the next year's public relations plan and safety management responsibility plan.
