A spin-off company of KIMS was established with EV battery component technology

Spread and expansion of EV with heat-dissipating ceramic material!

Soul Materials Co., Ltd. invested by Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS, President Jung-hwan Lee) was designated as

the 1283rd research institute spin-off company* by the Innopolis Daegu (Director Young-hwan Oh) under the Ministry of

Science and ICT.

Soul Material was received technology in-kind investment by KIMS based on patents from home and three foreign countries.

Soul Material, worth about 1.65 billion won co-founded by Korea Science and Technology Holdings (CEO Kang Hoon) with an

investment of 500 million won and supported by the Korean Intellectual Property Office with value evaluation and FTO

investigation in the Intellectual Property Profit Reinvestment Support Project, is a promising spin-off company for future EV

battery parts. Its main products are a heat dissipation magnesia (MgO) filler material and industrial ceramics with chemical

resistance and low-temperature sintering.

KIMS has suggested the possibility of replacing the market monopolized by Japanese companies by developing a new magnesium

oxide material with a thermal conductivity that is about twice that of alumina. As it's 90% lighter than alumina and has twice the

heat dissipation performance, the new material is expected to replace alumina in the long term.

Despite the good performance of magnesium oxide, it requires a high temperature in the sintering process to make the ceramic

powder agglomerate, which costs more to manufacture. Also, it reacts with moisture in the air. The research team at KIMS

succeeded in developing a new magnesium oxide material that was sintered at 1,400 , which is lower than alumina.

They even solved the hygroscopicity issue by using additives. The technology was invested in Soul Material.

Jung In-cheol, CEO of Soul Material, said, “Expanding the supply of EVs requires to increase the mileage through the development of

batteries with high energy density. Above all, in order to secure the safety of EVs, the priority is fire prevention due to battery thermal

runaway.”“We will do our best to make Soul Material a leading company in solving this problem,”he added.

Jung-hwan Lee, the President of KIMS, which invested the technology in Soul Material, said, “The spin-off company is

expected to achieve technological development to replace the existing alumina heat-dissipating material by laying a foothold

leading to the localization of the technology. We will continue to support the company so that we can localize and

commercialize as well as penetrate the heat-dissipating ceramic material into overseas markets.”
