KIMS held the Materials Korea Forum

The carbon industry's seeking for solutions to realize carbon neutrality!

The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) held the Materials Korea Forum (the MK Forum) to seek ways for the chemical industry to realize “carbon neutrality,” which was the theme of the Forum. The Forum was held on Tuesday, April 19 in the conference room of the main building of KIMS located in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do. KIMS is a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT.

As industrialization accelerated the rise in global temperature and William Nordhaus, the winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Economics, claimed to limit temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius for the first time, the need for carbon neutrality has been constantly raised. Carbon as materials or parts is closely related to realizing carbon neutrality, which requires carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction technology of the related industry.

At the MK Forum, Bang Yun Hyeok, the President of the Korea Carbon Industry Promotion Agency, delivered a lecture on the measures for the carbon-related industry to realize carbon neutrality. He emphasized “The necessity of establishing a business model considering the global supply of materials and parts made from carbon.” He also asserted that “As energy is the core of carbon neutrality, materials must play a key role in energy transition and conservation.”

The MK Forum hosted by KIMS will invite a total of 11 speakers by the end of the year to discuss materials technology-related topics which include carbon neutrality, artificial intelligence (AI), defense R&D, climate crisis, hydrogen economy, and big data.
