KIMS is designated as an operating institution of the 2022 Industry-University-Research Platform Project for Cooperative Technology Development by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups

To achieve materials technology independence with a purpose-oriented strategy for MPE!

The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS), a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT, is designated as the operating institution of the 2022 Industry-University-Research Platform Project for Cooperative Technology Development for SMEs organized by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. With 4.6 billion won of research funds over the next two years, KIMS will become a one-stop comprehensive diagnosis platform for a selection of companies in difficulties, preliminary diagnosis, consulting, and public relations.

The Industry-University-Research Platform Project for Cooperative Technology Development aims to discover SMEs with innovation potential and improve innovation capacity and secure sustainable competitiveness through R&D cooperation among industry-university-research. In other words, operating institution with expertise in each key field is selected for the project to consult SMEs in general.

As platform operating institutions, nine institutions were selected including 4 research institutes and 5 universities. KIMS will support companies in technical difficulties for advanced material technology independence through support for the empirical and practical use of core materials. In particular, a total of 20 companies, including 5 companies performing cooperative R&D and 15 companies in the direct cooperative R&D track, will be selected and supported for two years through company-specific R&D project planning. In this process, KIMS will conduct R&D project planning and execution, matching with technical experts and support for source technology and research equipment. In cooperation with the Korea Technology and Information Promotion Agency for SMEs, they will closely support companies for follow-up management, such as performance management and utilization of the technology.

The project is accepting applicants from April 25 to June 7 on the Comprehensive Management System for Technology Development for SMEs (www.smtech.go.kr). Companies wishing to cooperate with KIMS can apply to the Department of Corportation Support (jcb1@kims.re.kr) by referring to the notice on the website of KIMS (www.kims.re.kr).

Before being designated as the operating institution of the 2022 Industry-University-Research Platform Project for Cooperative Technology Development for SMEs, KIMS was selected as the operating institution for the 2020 Cooperative Technology Development Project for SMEs Support Leading Research Institution by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. KIMS is playing a leading role in industry-industrial cooperative R&D projects in order to support SMEs responding to national technical crisis and to create an innovation ecosystem.

Jung-hwan Lee, the President of KIMS emphasized the need for a purpose-driven strategy to support domestic businesses, and said, “Based on the empirical research complex for advanced materials being built in Jinhae, KIMS should take the lead in achieving true independence of purpose-driven materials technology. We will actively support the R&D model for the Korea Technology and Information Promotion Agency for SMEs and KIMS to become a new milestone in the business support project.”
