Abstract
The key factor that limits the performance of current gas turbines is
the high temperature capability of structural components in the engine
hot section, such as blades, nozzles, and combustor liners. Silicon-
based ceramics, such as SiC/SiC composites and monolithic silicon
nitride (Si3N4), have attracted interests as potential structural
components for next generation gas turbine engines due to their
excellent high temperature properties. A major stumbling block to such
applications is the recession of Si-based ceramics in combustion
environments due to the volatilization of silica scale by water vapor.
An external environmental barrier coating (EBC) is considered an
enabling technology for the successful commercial application of Si-
based ceramic components in gas turbine engines. Current state-of-the
art EBC was developed in the NASA’s High Speed Research-Enabling
Propulsion Materials (HSR-EPM) Program. The current EBC is based on
mullite (3Al2O3-2SiO2) and BSAS (BaO1-x-SrOx-Al2O3-2SiO2). Silica
volatility of BSAS limits the durability of current EBC. Research is
underway at NASA Glenn Research Center under the Ultra Efficient
Engine Technology (UEET) Program to develop EBCs with higher
temperature capability than current EBC. An overview of various issues
in EBC development will be discussed.
