The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS), a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT, obtained the Safety Laboratory Certification 2022 awarded by the Ministry of Science and ICT. The awardees are EB-PVD Lab, Ti Plastic Deformation Lab, Nano Magnetic Powder Lab, 3D Shape Control Lab, Pathogen Removal Materials Lab, Composite Materials Property Lab, Residual Stress Lab, and Dynamic Property Evaluation Lab. Among government-funded research institutes that have received new Safety Laboratory Certifications, KIMS has obtained the newest certifications (based on the first and second awards in 2022) for its outstanding safety management in laboratories this year.

The Safety Laboratory Certification is awarded to laboratories with excellent safety management systems through expert reviews, aiming to strengthen the autonomous safety management capabilities of laboratories at universities or research institutes and to discover and spread safety management models. In accordance with the safety management excellent laboratory certification system, the certification can be awarded only when marking a total of 80 points or more (80% or more in each field of the laboratory safety environment system (30 points), the laboratory safety environment activity level (50 points), and the safety awareness of laboratory safety management personnel (20 points)), and satisfying all four required items.

Jung-hwan Lee, the President of KIMS, said, “Excellent research results can be created based on the safety of the research environment. With the Safety Laboratory Certification followed by KOSHA-MS certification, a safety, and health management system certification awarded last year, we will make more efforts to spread safety culture and create a safe laboratory environment.”
