KIMS successfully transferred technology of absorbing electromagnetic waves in the 6G band to EG Co., Ltd.

Tech to absorb electromagnetic waves in the 6G band, got a business partner!

The Korea Institute of Materials Science(KIMS), a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT joins EG Co., Ltd., the world’s best company in the high-grade iron oxide market, to conquer the 6G band. KIMS held a technology transfer agreement ceremony with EG Co., Ltd. on June 14 (Wednesday) in the main conference room at KIMS in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do, and agreed to transfer the ‘epsilon iron oxide manufacturing technology.’

Epsilon iron oxide manufacturing technology, which is being commercialized by KIMS with EG Co., Ltd., is a process technology that consecutively manufactures materials that selectively absorb millimeter waves (50-200GHz) with high coercive force (20kOe). The existing electromagnetic wave absorbing materials have reduced absorption capacity in high- frequency bands or difficulty in controlling frequency bands. In contrast, epsilon iron oxide with broadband absorption capacity is significant as a core material for future communication parts. This technology can be used for 5G/6G wireless communication, low-orbit satellite communication parts, stealth, and radar sensors. As it is a high-coercive magnetic material, it can also be used in the field of electric parts for future mobility.

Through this agreement, EG Co., Ltd., which has received the technology for manufacturing Epsilon Iron Oxide from the research team of Dr. Youn-kyoung Baek at KIMS, plans to advance the commercialization of Epsilon Iron Oxide as a millimeter wave absorber. As a result, it is expected to secure growth momentum in the next-generation wireless communication parts and materials market and future mobility electric parts.

“If millimeter wave absorbing magnetic materials can be commercialized through this technology transfer, we will be able to take the lead and gain the momentum to go forward in the field of a wireless communication device using millimeter wave, self-driving car radar, and absorber for space satellite communication in the future,” said Youn-kyoung Baek, a principal researcher.

Meanwhile, EG Co., Ltd., which received the technology, is the best iron oxide manufacturer in Korea, established in 1987 and maintains the world's No. 1 market share in high-purity high-grade iron oxide. Iron oxide, the main raw ferrite material, is widely used as transformers and motors for electric vehicles and home appliances. EG Co., Ltd. has both design, construction, and operation capabilities of Hydrochloric Acid Facility facilities.
