Working with the F5 team to plan and produce the ‘Material Science Convergence Art Project’

The meeting of science with art and culture, blooming in the region!

The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) has undertaken the 'Grid Network Changwon' project in collaboration with the local artist team 'F5' with the aim of exploring new artistic possibilities through innovative materials and technological advancements. This initiative also seeks to contribute to the dissemination of scientific knowledge and popular culture.

‘F5’ is an artistic organization based in Changwon, comprising four artists-Soo-hwan Choi, Sun-cheon Noh, Nari Kim, and Dasom Kim who contemplate the positive social role of art and translate it into practical endeavors. The artwork‘Grid Network Changwon integrates materials science and was jointly developed by the ‘F5’ team and KIMS to overcome creative constraints and broaden the creative landscape by exploring original art materials.

The first artwork, ‘Changwon Topographic Map’, is crafted from steel and aluminum. It depicts the Changwon National Industrial Complex extending into the world, resembling a neural network connected with metal materials and surface plating technology. The work was produced by the‘F5’team in collaboration with Dr. Sung-mo Moon at KIMS. The second artwork,‘Man,’utilizes iron to represent lines and planes in three-dimensional space, forming the shape of a person. This artwork transcends the limitations of traditional sculpture, offering a new spatial experience by adapting its form based on the characteristics of the surrounding space. It was created by Sun-cheon Noh in collaboration with Dr. Sang-woo Song and Dr. Chan-kyu Kim at KIMS. The final artwork,‘Two Doors,’employs steel, smart window flexible boards, and photoelectric modules. These doors symbolize our interactions with others, serving as gateways to new experiences. This artwork was produced by Soo-hwan Choi in collaboration with Dr. Dong-chan Lim and Dr. So-yeon Kim at KIMS.

Dr. Jung-hwan Lee, the president of KIMS, stated that this project aims to surpass the boundaries of existing works by integrating new materials developed by KIMS into artistic creations. He emphasized the significance of the convergence of art and science in exploring and experimenting with new possibilities for the future amidst a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

KIMS is showcasing these artworks at the promotional hall on the first floor of its main building in Sangnam-dong, Seongsan-gu, Changwon-si. Additionally, it is collaborating with external organizations such as the Gyeongnam International Art Fair (GIAF) to organize external exhibitions accessible to the local community.
