Korea Institute of Materials Science, a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT, was
awarded the Presidential Commendation for its contribution to the domestic industry development through invention
promotion at the 56th Invention Day ceremony held at the 63 Convention Center on May 31.
Being hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office and organized by the Korea Invention Promotion Association, the
event was prepared to reward individuals and organizations that enhanced national prestige By promoting invention and
utilization of excellent inventions, the Invention Day aims to encourage people to create inventions and recognize the
contribution of inventors so that it can contribute to the development of industry.
KIMS has been recognized for its contribution to disseminating research findings to the private sector by securing intellectual
property rights for its core material technologies and technology commercialization; to securing materials technology for
domestic use; and to having global industrial technology competitiveness.
KIMS has laid the institutional foundation to encourage employee invention and create excellent intellectual property rights as
well as strived to build an internal consensus on intellectual property and technology commercialization to apply for 753 patents
over 5 years (0.67 patent applications per researcher).
Since the establishment of an organization dedicated to technology commercialization in 2019, KIMS has worked hard to
systematically create and manage intellectual property rights, thereby leading to promote IP (Intellectual Property)
management system of the government-funded research institute according to the 2nd National Intellectual Property Master
Plan. Moreover, despite the deterioration of external conditions including COVID-19, KIMS accelerated the dissemination of
national R&D outcomes to the private sector and contributed to improving national industrial competitiveness by actively
carrying out technology transfer for core materials to respond to Japan’s export restrictions: KIMS achieved over 100
technology commercialization contracts and earned 3 billion won in royalty income for a year.
