KIMS held a kick-off meeting to develop a database of lightweight aerospace materials |
KIMS held a kick-off meeting to develop a materials database for producing lightweight aerospace materials domestically. The
meeting was held in the seminar room of the KIMS Research Building 1 on Thursday, July 8.
The meeting was attended by Korea's leading companies in the aerospace industry, Hanwha Aerospace, an aircraft engine
producer, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), an aircraft developer, and Hyundai Mobis, a future developer in the Urban Air
Mobility (UAM) sector which emerges as a core industry.
The project aims to develop a database of core materials (aluminum, titanium, and nickel) for aircraft design
and manufacturing and to produce the materials in the domestic market. From 2021 to 2024, with the cooperation of leading
domestic testing and evaluation institutes, they will test the domestically produced aerospace materials supplied by materials
companies. Around 160,000 test values of aerospace materials are expected to be secured to establish the materials
database. It is anticipated that the competitiveness of domestic aerospace materials and the capabilities of domestic testing
and evaluation institutes will be strengthened.
Jung-hwan Lee, president of KIMS, mentioned, “KIMS and its Center for Aerospace Materials have been very supportive to
establish a foothold for the development and evaluation of metals for aerospace structure.” "Starting with the project, KIMS
will work tirelessly to produce the materials domestically in order to strengthen the competitiveness of Korea's aerospace
industry, which will become a high-value-added sector.”
