High sensitive sensor chips allow early diagnosis of myocardial infarction |
The research unit led by Dr. Sung-gyu Park from the Korea Institute of Materials Science(KIMS), government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT have successfully developed a three-dimensional nanobiosensor chip that can diagnose acute myocardial infarction within two hours by utilizing three-dimensional gold(Au) nanowire additive technology.
The research team once made a three-dimensional high-sensitivity biosensor chip by stacking silver nanowires with a diameter of 40 nanometers and a length of 10 micrometers. This time, however, they replaced silver with gold nanowire to enhance biocompatibility and also used a three-dimensional array chip that can analyze dozens of biomarkers simultaneously just using a single chip.
This technique allowed the detection of microscopic myocardial infarction biomarkers in a small amount of blood at about 30 times higher sensitivity than enzyme immunization method, one of the existing myocardial infarctioin diagnostics. Sung-gyu Park, head of the department said the study will enable rapid diagnosis of diseases that require urgent treatment such as acute myocardial infarction and sepsis, which drastically reduce existing mortality rate and medical costs.
